Comparing Parallels Desktop 7 to VMware Fusion 4 Series – Part 6

Screen Shot 2011-10-31 at 9.41.15 AM

Parallels Mobile

This is part 6 of my series comparing Parallels Desktop 7 to VMware Fusion 4, and in this article and video I am going show you a significant product feature that is unique to Parallels, which is something called Parallels Mobile.     As an optional component, Parallels has created an iOS App for both your iPhone and iPad that allow you to run your virtual machine on the iOS Device and remotely control your Mac desktop!

What makes this new feature neat is that you no longer need to be in front of your Mac to run say Windows applications, and if you want to visit Flash websites on your iPad, Parallels Mobile give you the ability to go to those websites to see that content with sound.   This mobile app works both over WiFi and 3G, and even allows you to access your computer remotely from behind secure firewalls.   If that were not enough, you can even Cut and Paste content from or to any Windows application to the iOS Clipboard and back!

Also don’t forget to enter to win my FREE IPAD 2 16GB WIFI Giveaway.   To enter all you have to do is go to my YouTube channel and SUBSCRIBE!   Watch this video below for a more detailed explanation and if you have topics you are interested in please let me know.

Parallels Destop 6
Parallels Destop 6

The Benchmark in Virtualization Software for Mac

Over the past several weeks I have had the pleasure of testing and working with Parallels Desktop 6 for the mac. This new release not only improves performance, adds over 50 enhancements, but also offers critical new hardware support such as SATA drive emulation!

Some of the top features of this new release are:

35% Speed Improvement
80% Speed Improvement on 3D graphics
SATA Drive Support
5.1 Surround Sound Support

In my testing Parallels Desktop 6 continues to improve on an already stellar product through performance, enhanced PC Hardware support and ease of use. Parallels Desktop 6 not only sets the standards but with version 6 pushes the gap even further away from other virtualization solutions.

You can check out my new features screencast here and look for an review of 3D performance coming soon.

What is a GigaPan?

Rochester, NY High Falls Fall 2009

A GigaPan is a special type of Panoramic photograph that is actually comprised of 100′s of individual photos that are all stitched together creating a huge high definition photograph. They can range anywhere from several hundred megabytes in size to the largest one yet produced which weighs in at 32GB’s!

Here is an example of one I recently took of Rochester, NY High Falls.
Rochester, NY High Falls Fall 2009
Click here to see the full GigaPan!

I am fortunate to be asked by the City of Rochester to create a GigaPan of the upcoming Veterans Day’s event with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at the Blue Cross Arena on November 11th, 2009. The press release from the City of Rochester can be seen here.

One of the really cool capabilities of a GigaPan photo is the ability to take Snapshots and then share those snapshots with friends and family. This is of particular interest since the Blue Cross Arena will be full of family members and loved ones and you will be able to find yourself in the panoramic and then share that snapshot with loved ones.

Below is a brief Screencast that will introduce you to a GigaPan and how they work!

I hope you enjoy and I look forward to seeing you at this historic event!

Apples App store and the rest of them….

With the outrageous success of Apples iPhone APP store the entire rest of the mobile phone industry is now scrambling to implement what Apple has created.   You can expect to see half baked efforts being announced from RIM, Google, and Microsoft during next weeks Mobile World Conference in Spain.   What amazes me most about this however is that these manufactures continue to just not get it….. the secret is in a robust feature rich OS & SDK… none of which these guys have, with the exception of Google’s Android.

A look at the evolving laptop display

As a photographer there are going to be times (many in fact) were you will need to review and evaluate your digital photos out in the field during a shoot.  This can represent a significant challenge when having to rely on a Laptop for photo review and color calibration.

Robert Galbraith has written a great artical that compares several of the leading 15″ laptops out there.  Unfortunately for me with my personal choice the Apple 15″ MacBook Pro did that fair well in his comparison.
